A TIDE IS A VERY LONG WAVE

SYRUP Contemporary, Sydney / Gadigal
31 August - 28 September 2024

Installation view, “A tide is a very long wave”, curated by Sarah Hibbs, at SYRUP Contemporary, 2024

Curated by Sarah Hibbs

‘A tide is a very long wave’ presents new and existing work from seven Australian artists; Joshua Edward, Yvette James, Clara Joyce, Izabela Pluta, Salote Tawale and Shan Turner Carroll; with, a new poem by Anne-Marie Te Whiu.

The gravitational forces between the Earth’s oceans and its moon give rise both to the tides and the curatorial concept. The exhibition explores the themes of tidal systems, from the metaphorical longing inherent in distant celestial attraction, the politics and lore of oceanspace, through the complex interplay of physical systems resolving in a steady periodicity, to the malleable nature of water itself.
