Eulogy for the Dyke Bar
BlaQ Dyke Bar Takeover
6-9pm Tuesday 21 February 2023
BlaQ Aboriginal Corporation took over Eulogy for the Dyke Bar creating a safe space that centred First Nations voices. BlaQ was established as a collective response to the identified need for a strengthened visibility of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQI+ community. Yorta-Yorta trans woman and BlaQ Training and Programs Coordinator Estelle Clarke led the programming, which began with a panel discussion addressing the erasure of First Nations contributions to dyke histories.
The panel included Biripi woman and Board Member of Sydney World Pride Aunty Sue Pinckham, Wiradjuri and African American woman and Sydney WorldPride First Nations Engagement Manager Ebony Williams, and Zagareb, Dauareb and Bindal woman and Macquarie University Indigenous Studies Coordinator Tetei Bakic Tapim. The conversation considered how colonisation has impacted the ability for people existing at the intersections of culture, sexuality, and/or gender diversity to connect with each other. The conversation was followed by an evening of music and dance with DJ SovBlkPussy, celebrating LGBTQI+ First Nations community and signalling hope for the future.
